Richard III was very fond of York while he was the Duke of Gloucester and had his son invested as Prince of Wales there, including a service at York Minster.  He was commissioning a chantry chapel to be built there, possible intending it to be used as a family mausoleum.  In the book, he and Rose visit the Minster and it brings back poignant memories for him.
