Ricardian Story in ‘Scary’ Anthology!

My post about ‘The Box Under the Bed’

murreyandblue

I wrote a short story a couple of years ago, one of the first ‘Ricardian’ works I had ever written. So, when a best-selling Amazon author, Dan Alatorre (whose blog I follow), announced he wanted to make an anthology of stories from a variety of authors, all on a ‘scary’ theme, I remembered this story and thought it might fit the bill.  It was pretty rough, so I updated and edited it a bit, improving it a lot, having learned so much in the time since I first wrote it.  And, to my delight, Dan accepted it.

The anthology, called ‘The Box Under the Bed’, is a compilation of over twenty short stories from at least twenty authors from various countries and the stories are from various genres – a great pick ‘n’ mix with something for everyone!  It is to be released on October 1st (just in time…

If You Can Dream It…

This is why you should pre-order ‘The Box Under the Bed’!

Carrie Ann Alexis

I recently posted about being a contributing author to The Box Under the Bed.  What an exciting experience this has been.  I am part of a private FB group where all the authors have been discussing the progress of the book, finalizing the cover design,  and looking at screenshots as the book is being formatted in paperback form.  Yes!!  And that is now available for you to order at Amazon!!

We have also been getting updates as the book has been climbing the charts of The Hot New Releases in our book category.  The last time I saw it we were at #7!!  How awesome is that?  That is why we are asking for pre-orders.  Amazon has all kinds of lists that are ranked by sales.  If we get to number one, then that means more exposure for us.

Dan, as always, has been talking about it on his…

Rose’s Playlist (14) – Magic by Pilot

I haven’t posted any song titles for ages, so I thought I would do so today. The next one is number 14, Magic by Pilot (a 70s pop hit) which I thought was appropriate because in this scene Rose is trying to formulate a Wiccan spell which will bring Richard back to her again.

Writing Authentic Battle Scenes

Might be helpful! I have mainly written about historical battles, so I had to research them and then pick the theory I liked. I did invent another battle, but it was a minor aspect and I didn’t have to go into too much detail!

A Writer's Path

by Ian J Miller

If you write historical novels, you may end up having to handle battles, and the question is, how to do it? The simplest way is to focus on one or more persons on the front line. You may be able to write some important character aspect of the protagonist, and this is good, but if so, the battle is merely an excuse to do that and is not an important part of the plot.

But suppose the battle is important, or you want to bring it to prominence? You may well want to do better than to describe a lot of hacking or shooting. To give an overview of what is going on brings you into the zone of strategy and tactics, but how do you do that? The obvious answer is, do some research, but where?

Readers’ reasons; writers’ reasons – do they ever agree?

This is very true!

Nail Your Novel

I recently had an email from a friend who has a literature PhD. He had read My Memories of a Future Life and wrote me a long, detailed response. Eleven pages, actually, which was quite daunting to open. Somewhat nervously, I read it. I needn’t have worried. It was kind and appreciative.

Indeed, it seemed to give me credit for a number of clever effects that were mainly accidental, not deliberate as he seems to have imagined.

For instance, my decision to give Gene Winter a leather bomber jacket. My faithful chronicler unpicked this as ‘bombing, linked to war – a sign that he will be destructive character’.

My actual reasons for Gene’s outfit were far more practical. I needed him to appear hunched, as if he was keeping the world out. A bomber jacket gives that postural shape in the reader’s mind. I could have left the kind of…

Dan Alatorre - AUTHOR
